Pop art emerged from beneath the shadow of abstract expressionism, a creative movement that virtually suffocated the 1950's art scene.  Pop Art was essentially a direct response to the western world's obsession with wealth and prosperity that so characterised the post World War II era.  At its most lucid, Pop Art utilises familiar items such as billboards, comic strips, print advertisements and supermarket products to put a culturally incendiary message accross.
